“Sabbath is Salvation”

Sermon Series: Rest

Date: March 26, 2023 / Speaker: Spencer Smith

Sermon Discussion

The Last Week | Part Two | Monday | Mark 11:12-19

Gathering Prayer.

Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions

  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • What insights did you gain?
  • What questions did it raise?

Mark 11:12-19

  • What is your initial reaction to these two events?
  • How do you see these events related to Palm Sunday? (Mark 11:1-11)
  • Take some time to reflect on the importance of the temple in Jewish life?

Jesus is demanding authority.

  • How do you think this picture of Jesus cleansing the temple fits with how most people view Jesus? How does this challenge your own perspective of Jesus?
  • What are one or two things Jesus has been challenging you about lately?

Jesus expects us to connect with God.

  • How does Jesus’ statement about the temple being a “house of prayer for all nations” contrast with the activities happening in the temple during Jesus’ time? What lessons can we draw from this for our own lives?
  • What parallels can you draw between the religious attitudes and practices criticized by Jesus in the temple and modern religious practices or attitudes that may miss the mark of true connection with God?

Jesus is the final temple.

  • Jesus himself is the final temple and the ultimate sacrifice. How does this truth impact your understanding of salvation and your relationship with God?
  • Reflecting on the idea that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, how might this perspective change the way we view ourselves and how we live our lives?

Put into Practice

  • What practical steps can we take to ensure that our religious activities are not merely going through the motions but are genuinely fostering a deep connection with God?

Closing Prayer.
