Sermon Discussion

SERMON ON THE MOUNT | TWO MASTERS| MATTHEW 6:19-24

Gathering Question:

What is one way you have experienced God at work in your life this week?

Gathering Prayer.

Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions

  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • What insights did you gain?
  • What questions did it raise?

Matthew 6:19-24

  • How can we practically store up “treasures in heaven”?
  • How can we determine where our treasure is (and thus where our hearts are)?
  • How clear is your spiritual vision right now? How clear is your priority in life?

Idolatry | “There is within the human heart a tough fibrous root of fallen life whose nature is to possess, always to possess. It covets ‘things’ with a deep and fierce passion. The pronouns ‘my’ and ‘mine’ look innocent enough in print, but their constant and universal use is significant. They express the real nature of the old Adamic man better than a thousand volumes of theology could do. They are verbal symptoms of our deep disease.

The roots of our hearts have grown down into things, and we dare not pull up our rootlet lest we die. Things have become necessary to us, a development never originally intended.

God’s gifts now take the place of God, and the whole course of nature is upset by the monstrous substitution.” (AW Tozer)

  • What is your reaction to this quote?
  • How have you seen people replace God’s gift with God himself?

Stewardship | Matthew 25:14-30

  • What resources has God entrusted to you?
  • How would you grade yourself in your Christian stewardship over the last year?
  • What resources do you need to make sure you are stewarding well in your life at this time?

Closing Prayer.
