Gathering Prayer

Father, by Your Spirit, please guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions

  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • Were there any particular insights or moments that stood out to you?

Romans 8:31-39

  • Reflect on Romans 8:31. What does it mean for you to say that “God is for us”?
  • Reflect on Romans 8:37. What does it mean for you to say that “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us”?
  • Read 2 Corinthians 11:23-27. How does knowing Paul’s background change your understanding of Romans 8?

  • Romans 8 assumes suffering is the expectation of the Christian life. How do you react to this idea?
  • How do you see modern culture handle suffering?
  • Think of the different types of suffering: suffering for my own decisions, for none of my decisions, for my good decisions. How does the promise of Romans 8:31-39 apply to different types of suffering? How does it offer hope and assurance in the midst of trials?
  • To follow Jesus is to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him. Therefore, to follow Jesus is to embrace discomfort. When is a time in your life with Christ when you have had to practice this kind of “suffering”?

Put into Practice

  • What are some practical ways you can build the kind of trust in Christ that can handle suffering with the mindset of Paul in Romans 8:31-39?
