God our Refuge | PART 4 | We will Not Fear| Psalm 46

Gathering Question: 

What is one way you have seen God at work in your life this last week? 

Gathering Prayer. 

Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

  • What stood out to you in the sermon?

  • What questions did it raise?

Psalm 46:2-3 “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

   and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

    and the mountains quake with their surging.”

  • What is your response to this point: Psalm 46 is a spiritual exercise in the opposite of positive thinking.
  • Why is positive thinking not enough to overcome our fears? 
  • What do you think are some of the common worst-case scenarios people are afraid of?
  • What does Psalm 46 teach us about the worst-case scenarios we may be afraid of? 

Job 38:1 “Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm…. 4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?…12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place…16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? 17 Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? 18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. 21 Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years!  

  • Do you find the LORD’s response to Job encouraging or discouraging? 
  • How is it helpful to remember the Lord is the Creator and we are the created? 

Do not fear…for I am with you

Genesis 26:24  Do not be afraid, for I am with you…

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; 

do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of 

them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake 


Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are 

with me; your rod and your staff,  they comfort me.
