Discussion Guide | Moses | Part 4 | Exodus 6:28 – 10:29

Gathering Prayer

Father, by Your Spirit, please guide us into all truth. Help us hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions

•  What stood out to you in the sermon?

•  What insights did you gain?

•  What questions did it raise?

Read Exodus 6:28 – 7:5

  • Moses and Pharaoh are resistant to the initiative of God. Moses protests to God, and Pharaoh refuses to acknowledge God at all. How are Moses and Pharaoh similar? How are they different? What’s the turning point for Moses? (hint – is it the presence of a trustworthy companion – Aaron?)
  • In the text a number of body parts are referred to: Heart, Fist, and powerful Hand. How do these features speak to you? How do they inform your understanding of God, and of people?
  • In 7:5, the Lord says, “The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” “Knowing the Lord” is a way of describing salvation. How does this speak to your view of God, of others, of what God is doing in the world?

Read Exodus 8:16-19; and 10:1-29

• What are similar or the same elements that take place in these plague scenarios? What does God do, Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, etc? What phrases are similar? What is different or unique?

• In 10:18, the text says, “Moses left Pharaoh’s court and pleaded with the Lord.” – he prays for his ‘enemy’. What is God doing in Moses’ life to bring him to this place? How does this feature show up in your life?

Put it into Practice

• Paul House (Old Testament Theology) thought that one feature of Moses’ reluctance was a fear of failure. He then added, “God lays no such burden on Moses.” What opportunity would you pursue if you were relieved of the fear of failure? Or the need for success the first time around? Is there something God’s been putting before you that you’ve been reluctant to say yes to for fear of failure?

• Pharaoh’s heart is or grows hard over this story. What are some steps we can take so that our hearts stay open and hospitable to God?
