Sermon Notes: 5-5-24

How To Love God | Part 2 | With All My Soul

Gathering Prayer

Father, by Your Spirit, please guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice, as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions

  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • What insights did you gain?
  • What questions did it raise?

Mark 12:30

  • Reflect on the passages about the soul mentioned in the sermon (Luke 1:46, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 11:28-30, Matthew 16:24-26). How do these passages deepen your understanding of the soul?
  • Discuss the various translations of the Greek word “psuche” (soul, life, person, being). How does this broaden your perspective of the soul’s significance in our lives?

The Trap of Self-Identity

  • Consider the modern cultural obsession with self-identity. How do societal pressures influence our understanding of ourselves? Share any personal experiences or observations you may have.
  • Reflect on the idea that the pursuit of self-expression often leads to greater conformity and self-centeredness. Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not?

No Confidence in the Flesh | Philippians 3:2-11

  • Paul mentions some cultural identity markers in this passage. What are some common identity markers we see in our own culture?
  • Contrast the question “Who am I?” with “Whose am I?” How does shifting the focus from self-identity to belonging to Christ change our perspective on life? Discuss practical examples of how belonging to Christ impacts areas such as contentment, forgiveness, decision-making and fear.

Put into Practice

  • What might you put into practice this week that will help remind you of your identity in Christ?
